Emergence and Progression
Well, this is a very strange way to start a blog. Recently, the college has taught us about Emergence and Progression in videogames. Basically, there are two ways games could develop players, but they are not exclusively one or the other and could be both. Progression basically develops the player through following the game's story and path, Emergence develops the players skill and mastery of the game.
Just like a lot of different topics discussed through the class, this is a topic I was well aware of, but did not understand it directly as a talking point, but rather through personal experience and many different video essays. Both work efficiently through their own methods. Emergence is really good for making the player feel accomplished no matter if they are starting out or if they are nearing the end. But progression gives the opportunity for the devs to create a narrative for the player. Some people may say that both mixed together is the best. But I say as long as you have mastery over the art, you can have one aspect to the extreme.
Even though I already knew these concepts, it is still fun to look at them and analyze them based on my own experiences.
