The Emergent Game of MGS5
Now it is true that MGS5 has you unlocking a ton of gear throughout the game.
However, no matter the gear you wear, the game prides itself on learning the game’s
details to truly master the game, hence why this game is widely considered to be an
emergent game.
The general rule applied to all the different missions in the game is that stealth is always
a better plan of action than running into battle and fighting immediately. This is mostly
due to the incredibly low health that the player has without many movement options
and completing the objective is always at its most effective when the enemy is not in
combat mode.
Two components can have long ranged communication with each other if the
components works as a symbiotic relationship (such as the sound of grenades can be
detected by enemies based on sound and sight) or if one component provides a
challenge to compete with another component (like how lethal weapons could deduct
the score of a main mission).
The game is entirely dependent on what the player has chosen to equip, what the player
does with their tools, how the enemy reacts in response to their tools and how the tools
can help achieve the end goal. These 4 main aspects of the gameplay loop are created all
thanks to the different components of the game. These components combined together
make an effect on your decision making, both if you are planning thoroughly or if you
are moments away from being caught.
