Hollow Knight Geo
Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania 2D platformer featuring bug like creatures where you explore a dying kingdom. The game has it's own form of money called Geo. Geo is used to buy various tools to make traversal easier with quick travel, buy items from merchants and upgrade your weapon. You gain Geo through many ways like killing enemies, selling artifacts, fighting in the coliseum, etc. Upon death, you leave behind your soul along with all the Geo you were carrying and you can only get it back by destroying the soul upon respawn. Fail to do that and die a second time, your Geo is gone.
Geo in Hollow Knight is an interesting mechanic that has a lot of potential, but feels a little under baked in some areas. I love the Geo upon death mechanic, but I wish there was a risk, reward system that allows you to store Geo in a safe place. Yes there is a bank in the game but there is a problem with it that dives into spoiler territory. You end up carrying all your money in the end. I find the stuff you can buy interesting during early and mid game as if I wanted something highly expensive, I would have to save up and hold on buying items. But Geo ends up becoming useless in the end game and I wish there was something else you could do with it late game.
Most games have a currency system already built. I feel that some games implement it better than others. Mario Odyssey has so many different things you could buy with coins you end up still buying clothes in shops late game. Breath of the Wild relies on consumables so you could use rupees to create better food for your adventure. So many games have a currency system, but I feel it is important that it should last the player all the way to the end of the game. Overall, it was a solid mechanic that lost its utility once the game nears its end.
